PLEASE READ
Following are some items of interest to Village residents. Please take time to review these items.
VILLAGE HALL –
The Village would like to provide an update regarding the municipal building. The building remains closed due to mold and structural concerns, with the safety of our residents and staff as our top priority. However, if you have questions or need assistance, phone messages are retrieved daily.
We are currently packing and securing all files and materials in preparation for mold remediation. In addition, the Village has begun exploring options for a new building.
We appreciate your patience and understanding as we work through this process and will continue to keep you informed of any updates.
WATER/SEWER –
Effective 1 May 2026, late fees are being reduced from 10% monthly to 3% monthly. At this time, there will be no increases in water/sewer fees pending further review.
COMING SOON! We are currently working on a system to allow debit/credit card payments. We will let you know as soon as the system is available!
Effective immediately, water bills can be paid at 1st Community Bank in Sherrard, both in person or in the night drop. However, you MUST include the bottom portion of your bill with your payment. In addition, payments can still be made at Village Hall until the building is demolished.
BURN DAYS –
Village ordinance allows burning on Wednesday and Saturdays only; this includes leaves, grass, rubbish, etc. RECREATIONAL FIRES ARE THE ONLY EXCEPTION.
VILLAGE CLEAN-UP DAY –
Village spring clean-up day (large pickup) is scheduled for Tuesday, June 9th. No building materials, yard waste, electronics, tires, or appliances are accepted. Electronics (except those with refrigerant) and paint can be recycled at Village Hall. However, please do not drop items off at the door; you can call Village Hall (309) 593-2415 and schedule a time, or contact one of the Village employees.
For appliance pickup, we have names of “junk” dealers that will pick them up free of charge. Contact us for more information.
VILLAGE BOARD MEETINGS –
Village Board meetings are currently being held at the Fire Station on the 3rd Monday of the month at 7:00 p.m. Unless otherwise noted, meetings are open to the residents; come and get informed and involved in your community.
Village of Sherrard Water Announcement:
"Switch to free Cl2 notice"
Hello all,
Its Sat Oct 11th.
This message is to do my best to notify all residents that my plan is to start the chlorine chemistry change tomorrow afternoon (Sun the 12th) at the water plant. People closest to there obviously will be affected 1st and likely are the most susceptible to stronger tastes / odor changes. People farther away it will take longer and may not notice it as much but the whole system will experience the free chlorine chemistry over the next several weeks.
With quite a few members utilizing the Village of Sherrards Facebook page we will use that page, and post this announcement around town in places like the post office Village Hall etc.
We try to do these regular flushing events at least twice per year, usually late fall, (October) and early spring, (March / April)
Starting this year we are "required" to have a "nitrification action plan." One of the actions we "perform" or "execute" in these plans is hydrant flushing and when necessary we increase our disinfectant dosage to "free residuals" usually just prior to, and during a hydrant flush.
At this time I feel it might be a good idea to do another shock / breakpoint chlorination with the flush again this fall. During this procedure the water may smell, and taste "different, " with many people describing it like "pool water." I can assure you it is still safe for all your needs including consumption, and the Chlorine levels will be kept within the required Illinois EPA limits.
There is one more thing we have learned having done these Shock chlorination events numerous times before. If your home has a water softener, it is a good idea to bypass it while doing this process. There have been several units fail shortly after these shock chlorination events. We believe in some rare occassions, the resin (media) in the unit perhaps has neared the end of its useful life already, and the increased disinfection sends the unit over the edge and may force you to replace it sooner than later.
So just to be safe, if you have a softener, when I announce what weeks I'm shocking and flushing, put your softeners in bypass if you have one. If you aren't sure how to do this, private message me and I'll help or walk you through it.
My apologies for the short notice (less than a week....) but I need to take advantage of the weather for flushing and coordinating this with some vacation I am taking.
Stay healthy and safe.
